Sometimes called Mambo or On2 Salsa, New York Salsa is best suited to the crossbody style of dancing, with a mixture of partner work and solo dancing (known as shines).
The classic music for this style is the type of music found on the Fania label from New York. This label included amongst its stars world famous artists such as Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Ray Barretto, Ruben Blades, Willie Colon and Eddie Palmieri. However, this style of music is not limited to these classic artists from the 70's and many modern musicians such as Jimmy Bosch and Ricky Gonzalez are carrying on this great tradition.
New York Salsa generally has a variety of sections within a track, perhaps with a Rumba section in keeping with the music's Afro-Cuban roots, some verses and choruses, and a middle section where the timbaleros and congueros throw down the percussion and the dancers can really let go with their shines.
